Amitabh sponsorship

Rescued from poachers as a 7 month old cub in India in 2003 and suffering severe malnourishment, Amitabh was lucky to have been spared years of abuse as a dancing bear.

He was rescued before his canine teeth were removed however his muzzle had been crudely pierced with a hot iron needle and a coarse rope pushed through the raw wound. Even more heartbreaking was the fact he had been forcibly blinded by the poachers.

For his first months at the sanctuary, Amitabh would cower in a corner terrified.  Eventually he learnt to trust again, welcoming his bear carers and fellow bears. Now Amitabh shares an enclosure with other blind bears.

Amitabh loves nothing more than to dig, trying to find insects during the day and digging himself to sleep at night. He's a mischievous bear and his best friend Ramu is never far from his side when he is being naughty.  He has developed a reputation as a 'snack thief', often polishing off the treats left out for his companions, which his carers have to replenish when he's napping.

By sponsoring Amitabh, you will be contributing to providing for his daily needs - a healthy diet, health checks, enrichment activities and a forest enclosure, as well as those of his companion bears. We will post you a letter containing a special sponsorship certificate with a photograph and information about Amitabh and the satisfaction that you have helped to make a difference.
