Free the Bears joins 1% for the Planet to protect threatened bears and wild ecosystems

Free the Bears is proud to announce that we have joined 1% for the Planet as an approved Environmental Partner, connecting our conservation work with a global network of businesses and individuals committed to supporting people and the planet.

Through this network, business members commit to giving at least 1% of their annual revenue to approved Environmental Partners, delivering meaningful impact for nature and communities around the world.

Environmental Partners accepted into the 1% for the Planet network complete a partnership assessment designed to ensure a high-quality network of organisations delivering positive environmental impact. Free the Bears’ inclusion recognises our long-standing commitment to wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection and community-based impact, underpinned by a proven operating model and strong program management.

For more than 30 years, Free the Bears has worked to protect threatened bears from bile farms, illegal wildlife trade and other forms of exploitation. Since our foundation in Australia in 1995, we have supported the rescue of more than 1,000 bears and today operate the largest bear sanctuary network in Southeast Asia, caring for nearly 350 rescued bears and 50 other wildlife species across five sanctuaries in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.

Through rescue, rehabilitation, research, rewilding and community programs, Free the Bears works alongside governments, local communities and conservation partners to protect threatened bears and the ecosystems they call home.

“Joining 1% for the Planet is an important milestone for Free the Bears and creates new opportunities to build on the impact our teams and partners have delivered over the past 30 years.

Protecting threatened bears has always been about more than rescuing individual animals. It is about protecting ecosystems, supporting communities and creating lasting change for wildlife and people.

We are excited to connect with purpose-driven businesses that share our commitment to conservation and want to create measurable impact for the planet.”

— Matt Hunt, CEO, Free the Bears

Through strategic partnerships, organisations can support Free the Bears in different ways, including funding critical conservation projects, expanding sanctuary operations, contributing specialist skills and expertise, engaging employees and customers through meaningful conservation initiatives, or helping amplify awareness of the urgent need to protect threatened bears and wild ecosystems.

If you are a 1% for the Planet business member looking to create measurable environmental impact, you can now select Free the Bears as an approved Environmental Partner and join us in creating a future where bears, people and nature thrive.
