Thank you for helping threatened bears

Your donation helps rescue bears from the illegal wildlife trade and bile farms, provide lifelong sanctuary, and protect wild populations across Asia.

With your support, we can ensure rescued bears have healthy diets, expert care, veterinary medicine, special treats to enrich their lives, and lush forested habitats with swimming pools, hammocks, caves, climbing platforms and more.

THE LARGEST BEAR SANCTUARY NETWORK IN SOUTHEAST ASIA

We care for more than 300 rescued bears across Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. Because of their past trauma, most will need specialised care and a safe, stable home for up to 30 years.

We’re rescuing more bears every year — and it’s only through your support that we can continue to say yes when a bear is in need.

We’re also working to stop bears being taken from the wild in the first place. The future of bears depends not only on those we rescue, but on protecting the forests where they belong.

Together, we can create a future where bears are free from exploitation and thriving in the wild.

BEARS BEFORE AND AFTER RESCUE

From the first day of their rescue to years of dedicated care in the sanctuary, your support helps make every step of a rescued bear's recovery possible.

Where your donation goes

We’re fighting for a world where bears are no longer exploited for profit, traded as commodities, or taken from the wild. A world where they are safe, in our care today, and protected in the forests they belong to.

Here are some of the ways your donation makes that possible:

  • Nutritious food

Many rescued bears arrive malnourished after years held captive without a natural diet. We provide a vet-developed mix of fresh vegetables, fruit, pulses and more to help them recover.

An adult bear can eat up to 42kg of food each week — and with lifespans of 30–40 years, that’s a lot of vegies!

  • Enrichment

Bears are extremely intelligent. To keep their complex minds stimulated and exercise thei natural foraging behaviours, we provide different daily enrichment activities.

From puzzle feeders to treat balls, enrichment keeps their minds active. But, nothing lasts long around a bear and they regularly need replacement.

  • Space to roam

To make up for the suffering rescued bears endured, we provide the most natural life possible. We have large forest habitats with pools for swimming, platforms and trees to climb and nest, and custom-built dens and caves for well-deserved naps. There's always expansion to be done, providing refuge to more bears in need.

  • Veterinary care

Many rescued bears arrive needing urgent, ongoing medical care – from cubs requiring round-the-clock feeds to bears suffering from disease or snare injuries. Our vet team works tirelessly to give each bear the best recovery.

We’ve also helped develop surgical techniques to reduce trauma, speed up healing, and even restore sight.

  • Protecting wild bears

We’re working to protect bears in the wild through research, field studies, and community programmes that help us better understand their behaviour, health and habitats.

By combining science with on-the-ground conservation, we can prevent bears from entering the trade and secure a future for them in the wild.

  • Combatting wildlife crime

We’re tackling wildlife crime by law enforcement, enabling rapid rescues, and helping stop the illegal trade that continues to put bears at risk. We also continue our fight to end the horrific practice of bear bile farming.

By building local capacity, we can not only rescue bears, but prevent them being taken from the wild.

While much has been achieved, the work is far from finished. Illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss and continued demand for bear products still threaten bears across Asia.

Free the Bears remains committed to protecting bears today while ensuring their survival in the wild for generations to come.

Every rescue, every protected habitat and every conservation breakthrough is made possible by people who care about the future of bears.

Your support enables bear rescues, lifelong care and the protection of wild populations across Asia.

Help us continue this important work, to protect the next generation of bears, by donating today.
