Young disabled moon bear rescued in Laos
We’ve just rescued another moon bear in Laos, the 5th bear rescued this year.
He’s estimated to be around two years old, and was kept in a small, metal cage, after being purchased as a cub from a local market.
He has been living on a diet of rice and cooked pumpkin. It wasn't enough to sustain a growing bear.
Sadly, this sweet boy is disabled. His limbs and body have not grown properly and his frame is stunted – likely the result of malnutrition and being caged during critical stages of his development.
He will need specialised care for the rest of his life.
As soon as we learned of him, our rescue team jumped into action to bring him to safety. After a long journey, he’s now enjoying a leafy den, likely for the first time since he was a little cub, after enduring years in a bare cage
This bear is the 173rd bear we have rescued in Laos — bringing the total number of bears in our care across Southeast Asia right now to 313. The highest it has ever been at one time!
