Scientists Unite to Protect Sun Bears

Sun bears are often called the world’s forgotten bear species. Protecting such a little-known species like the sun bear requires more than fieldwork alone. It also requires collaboration.
The First International Symposium on Sun Bear Conservation and Management was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in September 2017. It brought together around 100 scientists, conservationists, government representatives, and wildlife facility managers to share knowledge, identify challenges, and coordinate conservation strategies for the species.
The symposium covered a wide range of topics, including sun bear ecology, rehabilitation, wildlife trafficking and conservation planning.
By bringing together experts from across the region, the event helped identify research priorities and strengthen collaboration between organisations working to protect sun bears. The discussions also helped support the development of a wider conservation planning process for the species.
When researchers and conservationists work together, they can build a clearer picture of the challenges facing a species and develop more effective solutions. For sun bears, that collaboration is essential to securing a safer future for one of the world’s least studied bears.
